Learning Commons

Role of the Teacher-Librarian

The role of the Teacher-Librarian is crucial in meeting the needs of Orchard Park’s students by helping to develop comprehensive literacy skills. As the school’s information specialists, the Teacher-Librarian works cooperatively with classroom teachers in the planning, the teaching and the assessment of students, while being charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the Learning Commons’ collection contains current and varied print and electronic resources that support student learning.

The Research Process

The Four Stages of the Inquiry and Research Model for Problem-Solving and Decision-Making:

  1. Preparing for Research (e.g. defining question)
  2. Accessing Resources (e.g. locating information)
  3. Processing Information (e.g. evaluating information)
  4. Transferring Learning (e.g. presenting information)

As students move from grades 9 to 12 teachers and teacher-librarians work together to integrate Information Studies into subject curriculum expectations.

Students learn about each stage of the Research process in the specific areas of Reasoning, Organizing, Communicating and Applying.
